]]>Kohlfahrt 2013: The participants in a Kohlfahrt ("cabbage walk") arrange a walk through the countryside to a village pub, usually in mid-winter. Often this walk is linked with cross-country games like Bo§eln and the like. As fortification against the frosty weather and in preparation for the hearty meal, an ample supply of alcoholic beverages, such as korn, or for sailors, sherry, is taken in a shopping trolley or handcart, which are handed out as part of the games or at waypoints along the walk (e.g., at crossroads or pylons). At the village pub, the merry walkers are served with GrŸnkohl and, depending on the region, with [sweet (not to everyone's taste)] baked potatoes or boiled potatoes and Kassler, Bregenwurst, Pinkel or Kohlwurst. In addition there is also much to drink (beer, Korn) allegedly to aid the digestion. In many areas there is also music and dancing after the meal.

]]>Nikon D800 Test: This test was done with a Nikon D800 & Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lens, using three "stacked" Close-up filters: +1, +2, +4. The test was done to gauge the versatility of a single, mid-range, quality lens when used as a Macro or close-up. (NOLA Red Beans & Rice)

Do you really need a Macro Lens? Maybe, if macro is big part of your normal shooting. But if (like me) travel weight plays a big part of your lens decisions, you might consider packing one or more Close-up Filters. I found with a quality lens, like the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, I can produce acceptable macro images, without the need to lug around a dedicated macro lens.

Part of my issue was the 105mm was not focus-tuned, yet... so many of the images where a little front focused. Not bad at normal distances, but very prevalent at Macro levels. My biggest problem looks to be motion blur. In the past (with D700) the SB900 flash speed was more than antiqued to stop the water drop motion entirely with these settings. This just goes to show the D800 is more sinsative to motion blur.

]]>Nikon D800 Test: Sigma Wide Angle lens tests- (GPI_8025.NEF)

This was a test with a Sigma 10-20mm DX lens on a Nikon D800 (FX) body compared to a Sigma 14mm FX lens on same body. The first shot is the 10-20mm DX lens shot in FX mode (default). The second shot is the same 10-20mm DX lens with a 1.4 Tele-converter added shot in FX mode. The third shot is the 14mm FX prime lens shot in FX mode.

Using a 1.4 Tele-converter on the 10-20mm DX lens results in a wide angle shot almost equal to the 14mm FX prime. It's actually a little wider than the 14mm... closer to 12mm.
